How do employers view self-employment?

Is it just me or is self-employment frowned upon by potential employers.  I guess some see this as a cop out or a cover up that you are hiding something like the fact that you really haven't worked for that period of time.  If you have been unemployed for a while but you state that you have been working online then the employer may think that you are not one hundred percent truthful and they have no way of proving you right so they are wary of your employment history.  Why is it so hard to believe that someone has made a decent living working online?  After all it has become very popular over the past few years, so it shouldn't be that much of a stretch to think that people actually work from home online.  Or they may even wonder why you would want to return to the work force if you have been successful online.  Easy; sometimes things don't always work out they way you hope it would.  Sales can go way down, you can lose customers due to the bad economy and you probably do
